Powerscourt Estate, located in the village of Enniskerry, County Wicklow, is a large country estate which is noted for its house and landscaped gardens, today occupying 19 hectares (47 acres).
Powerscourt history going back 800 years with the 1st Viscount Powerscourt was keen to make his mark and assert his position as one of importance in society, so he set about transforming the medieval castle at Powerscourt into a grand mansion. In 1730 he commissioned the German-born architect Richard Castle to build Powerscourt House, a 68 room mansion which was completed in 1741. The mansion was designed around the medieval castle in the style of Palladian architecture and featured baroque dome-roofed towers on either side, giving it in the words of one architectural historian, “The massive dignity of a great Italian Renaissance villa.”
The gardens were created over two main periods. A formal plan for the gardens was first developed alongside the rebuilding of the house in 1743, and many parts of the gardens today include elements of those designs. Most of what we see in the gardens today was designed in the 1840’s by architect Daniel Robertson and implemented during the following forty years.
Powerscourt Waterfall features 121m of cascading water, set in beautiful parkland at the foothills of the Wicklow Mountains. The Waterfall is a haven for wildlife including the Sika Deer and the native Irish red squirrel.
Enniskerry Village
This extremely picturesque village was built to accompany the manor house of the nearby Powerscourt Estate and is an excellent base from which to explore the surrounding countryside as well as the magnificent Powerscourt grounds. Enniskerry features superb cafes and shops as well as a host of picture-postcard cottages and a charming village triangle. The clock tower in the centre of the village is also a very attractive feature. The Catholic Church circa 1843 by Patrick Byrne is one of the first gothic revival churches in Ireland. Lying in a beautiful glen of the Cookstown or Glencullen River, the wooded country around Enniskerry offers fine forest walks.

The farm at Tully was purchased from the Fay family in 1900 by Colonel William Hall Walker. Hall Walker became the most successful breeder of the age, enjoying his finest hour when King Edward VII led Minoru, born and raised at Tully, into Epsom’s winners’ enclosure following a famous victory in the 1909 Derby. In 1915 the farm and all its stock was gifted to the Crown and became The National Stud under the leadership of Sir Henry Greer. The success continued with the farm producing the winners of all five Classics. In 1942 Sun Chariot, born and bred at Tully, earned herself an indelible place in racing history when landing the fillies’ Triple Crown – the 1,000 Guineas, Oaks and St. Leger – for King George VI. In 1943, the newly formed Irish Government took over the land and buildings at an agreed valuation. In 1945 the Irish National Stud Company Ltd. was formed and it officially took over the running of the Stud on 31st August, 1946.
The Irish National Stud’s Japanese Gardens, renowned throughout the world and the finest of their kind in Europe, are far more than simply a treat for the eye. They also provide comfort to the soul, achieving exactly the objective that was set out when the gardens were created between 1906 and 1910. Devised by Colonel William Hall Walker, a wealthy Scotsman from a famous brewing family, the gardens were laid out by Japanese master horticulturist Tassa Eida and his son Minoru. Their aim was, through trees, plants, flowers, lawns, rocks and water, to symbolise the ‘Life of Man’. That plan was executed to perfection and Eida’s legacy is now admired by the 120,000 visitors who soak up the peace of the gardens every year.
